Oct 20 – 25, 2008

After travelling by car through Portugal for two weeks, I said goodbye to my fantastic traveling companion and navigator and travelled by train from Lisbon to the Algarve for some much needed R&R.

Lonely Planet at my side, I arrived in Tavira looking to find that special place to spend my last five nights in Portugal. So far the reviews in Lonely Planet and Trip Advisor had not failed to deliver.

After a 5 minute walk from the centre of town, I arrived at the Tavira Inn and I was greeted by my host Sabastiao, and shown to my room. The room had a Mexican Villa feel to it and was bright, spacious & clean. The bathroom was large with an opening window and a heated towel rack, excellent for drying laundry! What a luxury! French Doors opened onto a private balcony overlooking the beautifully landscaped backyard and terrace around a sea water pool. This was truly the nicest room I’d seen during my travels. A perfect little paradise!

I welcomed the opportunity to skip a few traditional morning meals and the mini fridge in the room would be perfect for storing a few snacks and chilling a bottle of wine or beer.

This guest house is also Sabastiao’s home and has a very eclectic mix of furniture and art both of which reflect the eccentric personality of my host. Several beautiful architectural elements some evident, some not, have been put into this home. Sabastiao’s design has enabled him to have his own very private living space both inside and out while hosting guests in five other rooms. Three of the guest rooms have private balconies and the pool and terrace are common areas for all guests to enjoy.

The time I spent in Tavira was the most memorable and relaxing of my three week vacation. I enjoyed beautiful beaches, excellent food, entertaining nightlife and uninterrupted sleeps.

Sabastiao, thank you for your guided tours, your generosity and sharing your love of the classics. You are a wonderful host!

Clean, comfortable yet quirky: the small and friendly Inn is a truly relaxing spot minutes from the centre of Tavira. I stayed at the Tavira Inn for a full week and could have made it two! This is not a hotel in the ordinary sense, but rather Sebastiao’s home that he shares with his guests. On the night he opened the bar, reidents of the five rooms were able to meet for a drink and get to know each other whilst listening to some high quality sounds.

The saltwater pool is sparklingly clean and the sunbeds and shady umbrellas offer an irresistible invitation to relax for a few hours between boat trips to the beach on the sandspit island, eating locally caught fish at one of the recommended restaurants or an evening listening to the free concerts in Tavira town.

The Inn is built on different levels into the hillside beneath the train track but rather than detracting from the charm - in my view - the few seconds as the train snaps through the calm adds a certain frisson to the tranquillity that is a feature of the Inn.

I work with children and enjoy the company of young people. but just sometimes it is great to be with adults only. For me it was a real treat to stay in a child free zone! Sebastiao, I will be back...

It felt like a home away from home. A very nice atmosphere and Sebastiao is the best host/hotel manager you can ask for. Very nicely decorated, with cool art and beautiful antiques. Nice pool area as well, although a little bit too cold to use it during our stay. Cool bar, which was open twice a week for the hotel guests. Not right in the center of town, but only around 7 min walk.

A great little hotel/Inn in a truly beautiful town.

There is a big pool (10m or so) and pool area which boasts excellent views of the inlet which snakes its way through the old town- just a short 3 or 4 minute walk away.

Sebastion is warm , helpful and friendly host.

The room was large and very clean. There was ample storage space and a small fridge. It had a nice big air conditioner which was welcome.

Tavira was excellent. There are enough services for we tourists but it still has enough local culture and colour (eg the fish market) to make it memorable. Take a trip to the beach or sit at the cafe at Bishop Square and have a few local beers (Super Bock is best).

Tavira Inn is a small Inn with 5 rooms placed in beautiful settings near Tavira. It's an easy walk from the center of the town with it's lovely restaurants, and slightly further away beautiful beach with lovely sand. Back from a day's swimming the Tavira Inn is so relaxing with it's beautiful palm trees and cool patios. It's the typical sort of place you're always looking for but generally don't find. That is if you're like me and don't like staying in big unpersonal hotels. Tavira Inn offers the perfect amount warmth and hospitality, allowing you to feel comfortabel and at ease. However, it must be mentioned, it is near a train bridge, and every now and again you do hear it. Overday it runs about once an hour, or less, and I never heard it at night. As far as I'm concerned worth another stay, and the place to be to escape the hastle of busy life.

We stayed for 5 nights at the Tavria Inn, Sabastiao the owner is a wonderful host, he is fun, speaks very good English and cannot do enough to ensure you have a good time. He has clearly invested much money and time in providing a fantastic place to stay and relax. The standards of the rooms, equipment and pool are great. Comfy sunbeds and parasols enable you to spend time by the pool in style. I have never stayed in a place that is so clean and well maintained. Just a couple of minutes walk from the town, it is close to wonderful cafes and restaurants. Would recommend to my friends and are looking forward to staying again.

Unique accomodation, spoltessly clean with a charmingly eccentric
host !!
We had 2 reservations before going;-

1. Paying in advance - please be assured no problem whatsoever.

2. The railway line - again no problem - the noise lasts for about 30 second bursts approx every couple of hours - does not run till 08.00 and we never heard it after 20.00.

Accomodation has been personalised with many interesting artefacts and is very comfortable - it was a pleasure to meet
Sebastiao our host and stay in his lovely Inn - we will return.

Tavira Inn is a quality small boutique hotel which gives the feeling of being a house-guest staying with friends. It is a great place to rest up and chill out when travelling and a convenient base for daytrips in the Algarve. The pool was an essential for us, as were the local restaurants and cafes. Sebastaio is a fun host and we hope to return. Regards Ian

“Tavira Inn - perfect place to enjoy lovely Tavira”

Robin-Christie B.C., Canada Jun 2, 2008 During April and May ‘08 we traveled for 5 weeks through Portugal and Spain - without doubt this was the most magical and relaxing place we stayed. We stayed at the Tavira Inn for the last week of May '08 - it was our second visit to Tavira but our first time with Sebastiao at his lovely inn. The town is as perfect as could be - set on the shores of a tidal estuary with a laid back approach to it's days - there's a magnificent beach that goes on forever just a short ferry ride away to the island. The perfect place to call home while enjoying this idyll can only be the Tavira Inn, as laid back and charming as it's setting. Other past guests have already mentioned the sea water pool, the small size (only 5 distinctive rooms) and the cool bar with great jazz. All positive attributes; but Sebastiao, the genius who put it all together is an absolute joy who cannot be overpraised. Always helpful, informative, funny and generous - but never in the way. The occasional rumble from the overhead rail bridge just reminds you of how quiet and peaceful it really is. Sebastiao has dealt with the noise problem in the rooms with well fitted double glazed doors and windows so inside it’s silent. Do not hesitate about the pre-payment requirement, it is very simple - we mailed a bank money order from Canada. No shows in a 5 room inn would be devasting. All in all we can't wait to return ! ! Our experience at the Tavira Inn was very disappointing. As mentioned in other reviews, the owner is very nice and helpful. He graciously offered to pick us up at the train station, which was very considerate. Unfortunately, our room was dark, damp, and musty, and from the moment of our arrival we started thinking about leaving earlier than planned. In any event, we pulled the plug on our stay at the Tavira Inn after staying just two nights into a six-night stay

Liked — Friendly owner Disliked — Everything else

I am very sorry for this guest experience and very disapointed with them. Unfortunately i was told only by by email that they decided to go on so i could not guess this disapointment. I do regret that they could not speak to me and insted have emailed me. This is a kind of joke in Portugal.

Dark... and dump, unfortunately yes. But not more than Tavira itself as the weather was miserably for near 3 weeks and, 5 meters from the river in the valey what could you expect - dump !? A nice and sunny place for you ? only ?)

Sorry but is dificoult to please everybody.Sebastião

Tavira Inn was an admirable surprise. I was looking for a quiet place to spend a week, away from all the city fuss and my wish came true.
With it's five rooms, the gorgeous garden by the pool, a bar with very good jazz and some stylish decoration you could not ask for better.
Besides all of the above, what really convinced me was the FREE wireless internet access. You can't even get that in some 4 and 5 star hotels!!!
A few more words about the host, which guided me to the right places to eat and see. Sebastião, thank you for the wonderful time and keep up the distinctive attitude that makes the Inn such a special place.

In short terms, you will just feel AT HOME staying at the Tavira Inn. And Sebastao has got the best plans for good and typical restaurants in the area. Much better than Lonely Planet or other unupdated guides! Don't wait for breakfast though and enjoy sleeping until midday ;-) Tavira is a lovely place, (relatively) quiet and close to the sea. It’s taken me over a month to post this review and that is party because we had such an amazing time it’s been hard to find ways to put it into words.

So in short, if you are looking for a quiet, restful, relaxing break alone – or with a significant other – the Tavira Inn is the only place to go in the Algarve.

It is completely unpretentious and yet a lot of thought and creativity has gone into its decoration. Best of all it has the personal touches that leave most five star hotels for dead.

Sebastiao is the perfect host – 20 years experience managing hotels has meant he has a sixth sense of what his guests need and yet without any of the fussy pretension you would get in a five star hotel. Rather he is cordial, relaxed and plenty of fun!!

The pool is fantastic. Don’t be put off by the train going over head. It only goes past once every couple of hours and we kind of liked the combination of lying on your back in the swimming pool while the city briefly flies over head.

Niether should prospective guests be put off by paying by wire transfer. It is the most cost efficient way for the Tavira Inn and realitively hassel free to do yourself. Most importantly, it ensures that the Tavira Inn can remain the intimate, special place it is.

Also, remember to ask for things. Sebastiao has something like 20 years experience running exclusive hotels and is not adverse to taking requests from guests. i.e If you are a caffeine addict like me and need coffee first thing in the morning, just ask him for a kettle to put in your room (I did not think to do this until the day we left!)

It's a truly special place. We had the time of our lives – and will definitely be returning!

A really pleasant stay at a very individual hotel. If you like the normal, commercial type of hotel, with kids running around and a pool full of people, this is not the place for you. Quiet ( apart from the ocassional train, which actually adds to the whole experience ) and full of character, with a lovely little sea-water pool mostly to yourself. Very relaxing! Thank you Sebastian.

My husband and I stayed at the The Tavira Inn for 2 weeks in June 2007. The Inn is a great place to stay. The rooms are beautifully decorated and very clean. Its a real bonus having the saltwater pool when the weather is hot. The Inn is very close to Tavira centre (5 minutes walk) and has a very peaceful feel to it. Ideal for couples wanting to get away from it all. Tavria itself is a romantic, laid back town with lovely resteraunts and a fabulous beach. We'd highly recommend coming to Tavria and staying at the Tavira Inn. Thanks for taking such good care of us Sebastiao. Cat and Yan.

We're so sorry not to have said goodbye to you before leaving. We had a wonderful time in Casa do Rio and of course we will write a super review for trip adviser. As a matter of fact, it was the reviews on that website that decided us to visit your wonderful inn. Thank you for being so welcoming and also for all your expert advice on restaurants, etc. Our batteries have been truely recharged! Could you please say a special 'hello' to Jean Maria. He is an adoarble boy and you have to be so proud of him. He will be signing autographs in the the not so distant future and we will be saying...''we know that young man!'' Also, please remember us to Kat and Jean. Unfortunately we did not say our goodbyes to them....they are such a lovely couple and we had such fun with them! We wish you the best of luck with the rest of the season in Casa do Rio. We will be thinking of you often and remembering with absolute fondness our wonderful stay with you. We will definitely do it again.....next time I'll do my practice!

What a wonderful find! Our stay in Tavira couldn't have been better, largely thanks to having a great host like Sebastiao, who made us feel completely at home in his beautiful and very original house. This was our fifth year straight at the Tavira Inn. Our first time at Easter. Tavira is an enchanting place and the Casa Do Rio a beautiful house to take time off from daily routine. Don't hesitate, just go there.

The Tavira Inn is a lovely place to stay, very close to the centre of Tavira and with a lovely garden space for relaxing. It was my first time in Portugal and I would return to the Tavira Inn

What can one say about staying at the Tavira Inn? Ah yes, once you've stayed you will want to keep coming back to enjoy the delights of the Inn and its excellent host Sebastiao.

And what about Tavira itself? I'm reluctant to praise its many wonderful aspects as I want to keep it as it is....but then that would be very selfish....and its good to share! Can't wait to return to enjoy Tavira's people, river, sea, beach, food................

The Tavira Inn is a lovely little hotel and is full of character. Rooms are comfortable and spacious and decorated with lovely paintings. Sebastiao is also a wonderful host.
The town of Tavira is beautifully Portugese and relatively unspoilt. No Mcdonalds or Burger king - fantastic.
